A portrait, landscape and figure painter, Gilbert Solomon attended the Slade School of Art from 1907–11, one of a number of Jewish students, who included Mark Gertler, Bernard Meninsky, David Bomberg and later Kramer, Goldstein and Lowinsky, the majority assisted by the Jewish Education Aid Society. Solomon and Lowinsky however were wealthy enough to pay their own tuition fees. Solomon later studied in Paris under Renee Prinet (1913-14), before returning to London. An Associate Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1923, elected full member in 1926, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy. During the Second World War he was involved in civilian camouflage. In his final years he was President of RBA.
