Work by Shimshon Holzman

Biography

Painter Shimshon Holzman was born to a Jewish family in Sambir, Galicia, in 1907, moving with his family to Vienna, Austria and then, in 1922, to Tel Aviv, then part of British-administered Mandatory Palestine. In 1926, Holzman studied painting under Yitzhak Frenkel at the Histadrut Art School in Tel Aviv, where his contemporaries included Moshe Castel. From 1929 he made numerous trips to Paris, where he studied briefly at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, took part in several salons, and was deeply influenced by Matisse and Dufy. After his return, he later founded an Artists’ Quarter in Safed. In 1937 Holzman was the first-ever recipient of the Dizengoff Prize for artists, which he also won in 1959, the year in which he represented Israel at the Venice Biennale. Holzman died in Tel Aviv in 1986. His work can be found in the collections of the Israel Museum and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
