Painter and sculptor, Abraham Newman was born into an orthodox Jewish family in Bootle, Lancashire. He studied at the Liverpool School of Art (1927-32) and then in the Sculpture School at the Royal College of Art (1932-35), influenced by Epstein, Gill and Mestrovic, but afterwards retrained as a solictor. He served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Afterwards he had exhibitions in Liverpool, Paris, Florida and London. He became known for painting in watercolour and gouache in a Pointillist manner.
